AB - In the first part of this work, we examine the nature of the problem facing the focus on competencies, characterizing it as the generalized Pólya problem. We use the classic dichotomy between declarative and procedural knowledge and the notions of metacognitive reflexivity and metadidactic shift (in the sense of Brousseau) to interpret the answers they provide to certain versions of the problem, as in the focus on competencies in Project KOM (Competencies and the Learning of Mathematics) and the Theory of Conceptual Fields. In the second part, the above problem is reformulated in the domain of the Program of Epistemological Research in Didactics of Mathematics, which leads to rethinking the very notion of competence as the solution to the Pólya problem and the problem of research in didactics.
