In order to study the contributions and limits for learning with such a duo, we propose a theoretical development in the instrument-conception duality which brings together the notions of instrument from Rabardel and conception from Balacheff. Brousseau's characterisation of learning as adaptation to a milieu together with Rabardel's instrumental approach allow us to establish conditions for creating a duo. We then present the methodology of creating a duo of digital and material artefacts, starting from the problem of constructing a triangle with ruler and compass. Hence we show how the instrument-conception of duality allows us to bring out the effects of the duo in the learning of pupils, in terms of compass instruments and in terms of conceptions of triangle.
