AB - In this article, we examine the possibilities and limits of the use of geometry in the teaching of linear algebra. Fischbein’s work on intuition enables us to describe that use in terms of the employment of geometric or figural models.
We study the possibilities of using such models and of their effective uses by teachers of linear algebra in France. We focus in particular on models stemming from the geometry taught in the French secondary school. Another part of our study is dedicated to figural models in linear algebra. We demonstrate that the possibilities for using such models are underexploited by teachers. An optimal use of geometric and figural models would in fact require the introduction of an intermediate model, less general than the complete theory. But it would constitute a major change in the usual teaching of linear algebra in the French university.
