TY - JOUR TI - Problems of transmission and translation. The case of MacLaurin on negative numbers AU - Schubring, Gert T2 - Recherches En Didactique Des Mathématiques AB - In a well-known study by Georges Glaeser, Colin MacLaurin is presented as a characteristic case of a mathematician who reveals “obstacles” in understanding the concept of negative numbers. A closer looks shows, however, that this assessment had not been made with the original text, but with the French translation. The translation thus constitutes a case for a transmission process into a mathematical community with differing epistemological views on mathematics.
