We show how certain determinations constrain these practices by leading teachers to propose, to students working in small groups, settings that are successively 'open' then 'restricted' which does not allow them to develop their mathematical understanding. We contrast such practices with an instructional approach whose prominent features we describe and characterize. The last part of the article is devoted to a proposal of some categories for designing the mathematical work in AIS.
