AB - The research presented in this paper belongs to Cecilio Fonseca’s PhD and starts from the study of mathematics teaching difficulties in the transition from secondary school to university. Within the approach of the Anthropological Theory of Didactics, we formulate some conjectures relating to the rigidity of the mathematical activity that can be done currently at Spanish secondary education. More precisly, we specify in which sense mathematical organisations studied at Secondary schools are punctual, rigid and poorly connected to each other, which avoids them being integrated in broader mathematical organisations more or less complete. These conjectures are tested on the answers given by a large sample of students to a specific questionnaire and, in parallel, on what can be called “the answer given by official textbooks”. The experimental study shows the importance of institutional restrictions to the mathematical activity as it is done at school. This brings us to situate the incompleteness of mathematical organisations at the origin of the didactic discontinuities between secondary school and university.
