ABSTRACT
In this article we approach the title question first with a brief description of the basic questions in field of didactique – their sources, their interdependence and their complexity. We then discuss the two majn areas in which it is reasonable for a teacher to expect to see applicable results: techniques for the teacher and knowledge about teaching. For each we describe how didactique ad dresses the issues, concluding the section with an explicit list of what we feels to be realizable objectives. We presents the difficulties of diffusion and danger of misinterpretation of results that didactiquè has already produced. In conclusion, we discuss the relationship between didactique and generic innovation.
